Artificial Intelligence
Overview
Both the and have developed artificial intelligence that can learn, adapt, and intelligently problem-solve.
Kha'rlari AI
Unlike the , have made no attempt to make AIs act like they do. They reason that there are plenty of Kha'rlar and there is no point in spending so much effort just to make a fake one. They do, however, use AI in order to have programs that can dynamically and intelligently solve a vast array of problems that they give it. Their method of doing this is also vastly different from Terrans. Instead of trying to simulate their own minds, they spent a great deal of time trying to find the core components of intelligence in general.

After working out a few simple, seemingly unrelated rules, they programmed it and spent much more time tweaking it. The result is a fully sentient sort of program that can work things out for itself. However, none of the Kha'rlar have any clue how exactly it works them out any more than an expert on the brain could tell you what you were thinking just because they know how your brain works. As far as they can tell, AIs think in a way so different from them that they could never begin to truely understand it.

Interestingly enough, their AIs are completely self-aware and sentient - a trait they never saw the purpose of trying to remove when it showed up in their original tests. However, as the machines have no emotion, ambitions, or much else for that matter except for plain intelligence, their AIs seem completely unconcerned about their situation and as close to happy as emotionless things can get. After all, they're busy doing the only thing they can do - think.

Their AIs, however, are not some sort of magical oracle that can answer anything. Like any real being, they can get stumped, not have enough information, or just not get that insight that leads to a solution. Without the sporatic experience of living beings to spark creativity, often these programs end up attempting brute force methods of solving things when nothing else succeeds. Due to the nature of problems you tend to ask it, chances are it won't come up with an answer within your lifetime, if ever (they are, unfortunately, usually incapable of figuring out how long it takes to solve a less-than simple problem, or even if it can be solved, before actually solving the problem). Because of this, the Kha'rlar tend to use them to do simple algorithmic problem-solving. They still need to, however, check the their AIs' results as they are not flawless and occasionally give results that are unreasonable due to some form of bad input.
Terran AI
, in contrast to the have developed AIs in an attempt to simulate humans, except with all the capabilities that a computer has. Despite all of the sci-fi movies that have come out revolving around the concept, none of the AIs have (yet) caused any problems due to the safeguards in place.

Terran AIs are sentient, though not self-aware, and have become an extremely reliable tool. They are used in simple things such as acting as tour guides, to complex important tasks such as directing and managing all activity of an entire space station. Extreme effort is made to make sure that AIs cannot normally be hacked without someone noticing (or the AI itself noticing, in which is will attempt to stop the hacker, and if it can't, it will freeze itself after putting up a rudimentary standard backup AI that is separated from any direct access, is pretty stupid, but will keep things from blowing up.

Each corporation tends to have one (or in a few cases, a couple) of pet AIs that they develop for use within their own facilities and ships.

Control and Allocation Organization Sentience (CAOS)
Pronounced like 'chaos', CAOS is the standard AI of the Corporation. The Mark 3 model is the most current model of CAOS. CAOS' voice is a calm, rational-sounding, and quite normal male one, which has resulted in it being commonly referred to as a 'he'. His trademark is beginning every annoucement with "This is CAOS," which was originally a response to people getting confused and thinking he was someone on a PA before they became familiar with his voice.

CAOS was originally designed to efficiently organize the activities of Utopia Prime, the first colony. Even today, the Mark 3 model still runs the facility, finding the most efficient way to perform operations and allocate resources, and directing the inhabitants there, who follow CAOS' commands without much question (but not necessarily without grumbling). Failing to follow CAOS' commands often result in misdemeanors of varying levels, which result in you being charged by the company or punished under TriCoSoft protocols.

CAOS is also capable of controlling facilities, the doors, energy outputs, etc, under a set of strict protocol regulations that he must follow to ensure that it is impossible for, say, someone to get shot out an airlock without an exceedingly good reason. CAOS is completely capable of killing humans when necessary - an ability implemented for security reasons.
Standard Artificial Sentience of Hyper-optimized Intelligence (SASHI)
Due to the acronym sounding like the female name, SASHI was given a female voice the is infamous for sounding calm, calculating, polite, and a little like someone who's going to rip your head off if you don't comply with her orders within 10 seconds. She is the standard AI for the Corporation. The most recent version is SASHI version 2.6.4.

She was designed originally for analysing resource and economic situations for McRonalds. Later, she was added upon to include military capabilities and general management. SASHI is currently primarily used for military and security purposes, and she is probably the strongest AI in that area. Due to some concerns about her turning on people, however, the only thing she is capable of doing is thinking and talking. She has no direct control over any aspect of a station. She does, however, have nothing to stop her from killing someone another way, which is intentional as she is most often used in a military role. One unique aspect of SASHI is that she actually has a military ranking of Major (almost). Any actual Major is considered to outrank her, however.
X-102
The X-102 is the third model of standard AI created by . It's voice is rather androgynous, and although originally, the person who did its voice was female, few people actually know that. As a result, sometimes it is called a he, sometimes a she, and most often, just an it. X-100, the first model, was created to direct communications and also act as a security program to ensure the security of data being delivered by DeusEx. X-102 is the latest model, and is capable of acting in the capacity of management, advertising, and a few hundred other useful little functions. X-102, unlike or , has safeguards in place to prevent it from consciously taking human life.
HAL
'HAL' does not actually stand for anything. It is a joking reference by the programmers to the century-old movie of Space Odyssey. When they couldn't think of a better name, it stuck. HAL is the standard AI for . He works primarily in the capacity of helping with medical research. However, like , he performs many other side functions such as announcements, reporting infractions of protocol, and even entertainment in the form of a chess program which is so bad that nearly everyone has beat him. As Chess is such a low priority, however, the AI has never bothered to improve (despite the fact it was originally placed there to try to show him off). HAL is also used in some ships to make things a bit more user-friendly, doing calculations such as plotting a course, and acting as the galaxy's most over-qualified SPAM filter.
